Managing blood sugar can feel worrying, especially when readings keep changing throughout the day. The HbA1c test gives a clearer picture by measuring your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. It is commonly advised for diabetes screening, long-term diabetes monitoring and understanding how well your treatment or lifestyle plan is working.
Manipal TRUtest lets you book the HbA1c Test through a trusted diagnostic network backed by advanced technology, qualified professionals, and home sample collection options, where available. The testing process is designed to make quality diagnostics more accessible, affordable, and transparent, allowing you to keep a check on your health and make informed decisions.
What is the HbA1c Test and What Does it Measure?
The HbA1c test, also called the glycosylated haemoglobin test or glycated haemoglobin HbA1c test, is a blood test that helps measure your average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months. HbA1c refers to haemoglobin that has glucose attached to it. When blood sugar levels remain high over time, more glucose attaches to haemoglobin.
This makes the HbA1c blood test different from a regular sugar test. A routine blood sugar test usually shows your glucose level at a particular point in time, while the sugar test HbA1c gives a longer-term view of blood sugar control.
Doctors may advise the HbA1c test to screen for diabetes, detect prediabetes, monitor diabetes control, or assess whether a treatment plan is helping maintain healthy glucose levels. It is also useful for people who want to understand their diabetes risk as part of a preventive health check.
For a more complete assessment, your doctor may also recommend related tests such as the Blood Sugar Fasting Test or Postprandial Blood Sugar Test.
When is an HbA1c Test Advised?
An HbA1c test may be advised if you have symptoms of high blood sugar, risk factors for diabetes, or an existing diabetes diagnosis that needs regular monitoring. Since the HbA1c blood test helps assess long-term glucose control, it is often used along with other blood sugar tests.
Symptoms That May Require Testing
Your doctor may advise an HbA1c test if you experience:
• Frequent urination
• Increased thirst
• Unexplained tiredness
• Blurred vision
• Slow wound healing
• Unexplained weight changes
• Frequent infections
• Increased hunger
• Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
These symptoms do not always mean diabetes, but they should not be ignored, especially if they are persistent or recurrent.
Who May Be Advised for an HbA1c Test?
The HbA1c test uses include screening, monitoring and treatment follow-up. It may be recommended for:
• People with diabetes
• People with prediabetes
• People with obesity or a sedentary lifestyle
• People with a family history of diabetes
• People with high blood pressure or high cholesterol
• People with a history of gestational diabetes
• Pregnant women, if advised by a doctor
• People undergoing routine preventive health checks
• People whose fasting or post-meal sugar levels are abnormal
What is the Procedure of the HbA1c Test?
The HbA1c test procedure is simple and usually takes only a few minutes.
• A trained phlebotomist collects a small blood sample, generally from a vein in your arm.
• The sample is collected in an EDTA tube and sent to the laboratory for analysis.
If you book the HbA1c blood test through Manipal TRUtest, the sample is processed as per defined quality protocols. If home sample collection is available in your location, a trained professional visits your home at the scheduled time, collects the sample safely and sends it for testing.
Once the test is processed, your HbA1c test report is shared securely within the stated turnaround time.
What are the Preparations Required for the HbA1c Test?
In most cases, fasting is not required for an HbA1c test. You can usually take the test at any time of the day, unless your doctor has advised other tests along with it.
The best time for HbA1c test collection is usually the time that is most convenient for you, as the result reflects average blood sugar over the past few months rather than a single meal-related reading.
Before the Test
• No special HbA1c test preparation is usually needed.
• You can usually eat and drink normally before the test.
• Inform the phlebotomist if you are taking any medicines.
• Follow your doctor’s instructions if other tests are booked together.
• Carry a prescription, if required.
• Stay hydrated before sample collection.
Note: If your doctor has advised an HbA1c and fasting insulin test, Blood Sugar Fasting Test, or other glucose-related tests together, fasting may be required for the additional tests. Always follow the instructions given at the time of booking.
How to Interpret HbA1c Test Report?
Your HbA1c test report shows the percentage of glycated haemoglobin in your blood. The result helps your doctor understand your average blood sugar control over the past 2–3 months.
The normal range in an HbA1c test and interpretation may vary depending on your health condition, age, medical history and doctor’s advice. However, the following ranges are commonly used as a general guide:
| HbA1c Level | General Interpretation |
| Below 5.7% | Usually considered normal |
| 5.7% to 6.4% | May indicate prediabetes |
| 6.5% or above | May indicate diabetes |
The normal range in an HbA1c blood test may be interpreted differently in people who already have diabetes, older adults, pregnant women, or people with certain medical conditions. Your doctor may also compare your HbA1c test range with fasting blood sugar, postprandial blood sugar, symptoms, medications and overall health.
Do not change your medicines, diet plan or insulin dosage based only on the HbA1c test report without consulting your doctor.
What Does an Abnormal HbA1c Test Indicate?
An abnormal HbA1c test result may indicate that your average blood sugar levels have been higher or lower than expected over the past few months. The meaning of an abnormal result depends on your overall health, current treatment plan and whether you have already been diagnosed with diabetes.
High HbA1c May Suggest
• Prediabetes
• Poorly controlled diabetes
• Need for treatment review
• Need for lifestyle changes
• Higher risk of diabetes-related complications over time
If HbA1c remains high for a long period, it may increase the risk of diabetes-related complications affecting the heart, kidneys, nerves, eyes and blood vessels.
Low HbA1c May Be Seen In
• Frequent low blood sugar episodes
• Certain blood disorders
• Recent blood loss
• Recent blood transfusion
• Some medical conditions affecting red blood cells
An HbA1c result should not be viewed in isolation. Always review your HbA1c blood test report with a qualified doctor for accurate interpretation and next steps.
What are the Steps I Should Take After the HbA1c Test?
After receiving your HbA1c test report, the next step depends on your result and your doctor’s advice. If your HbA1c level is within the normal range, your doctor may advise routine monitoring and healthy lifestyle habits. If the result is high or borderline, further evaluation may be needed.
You May Be Advised To:
• Consult a doctor for report interpretation
• Repeat the HbA1c test after a recommended interval
• Take additional tests such as Blood Sugar Fasting Test or Postprandial Blood Sugar Test
• Review your diet, physical activity and medication plan
• Monitor blood sugar more regularly
• Take a C-Peptide Test if insulin production needs evaluation
• Take a CBC Test if your doctor wants to check for blood-related factors that may affect interpretation
• Follow a personalised diabetes management plan
If your HbA1c level is high, do not panic. Early action, regular monitoring and timely medical guidance can help manage blood sugar levels more effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions
HbA1c stands for haemoglobin A1c — haemoglobin in the blood that has glucose attached to it, commonly understood as the haemoglobin A1c test.
An HbA1c level of 6.5% or above may indicate diabetes. Very high levels may suggest poor blood sugar control and should be reviewed by a doctor to reduce complication risk.
For many adults, an HbA1c below 5.7% is generally considered normal. For people around 70, individual targets may vary depending on overall health, diabetes status, medicines, and risk of low blood sugar.
No single food reduces HbA1c immediately. A balanced diet with high-fibre foods, pulses, whole grains, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats, and controlled portions may help improve blood sugar control over time.
Fasting is usually not required. However, if other tests are advised alongside it (e.g., Blood Sugar Fasting Test or fasting insulin test), fasting may be needed.
A level between 5.7% and 6.4% may indicate prediabetes. A doctor may advise lifestyle changes, repeat testing, or additional blood sugar tests.
Often every 3–6 months, depending on blood sugar control, treatment changes, diabetes type, and doctor recommendations.
It may mean average blood sugar has been above the recommended range over the past few months. A doctor may review diet, medicines, activity level, and further testing needs.
Cost may vary by city, diagnostic centre, home collection option, and offers. Latest pricing can be checked on Manipal TRUtest.

Everyday habits such as unhealthy diets, stress, sedentary lifestyles, and poor nutrition can lead to numerous health issues. To combat these risks, it is recommended by international medical experts that individuals over the age of 35 for men and 40 for women undergo an annual preventive health checkup.
